Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has attacked President Nana Akufo-Addo's selection of beneficiaries for the recent National State Awards.

Speaking at the 43rd anniversary celebration of the 31st December Revolution, Asiedu Nketiah expressed doubts about the awards' authenticity, claiming that certain recipients did not merit the acclaim they received.

He also questioned the absence of transparent procedures for picking honorees, arguing that the process weakens the awards' status.

He proposed for laws to govern the organization and presentation of National and State Awards, highlighting the importance of openness, justice, and a merit-based system.

"State awards are serious business." They must be reserved for persons of distinction, those who have fought for a better future. If we offer state honors to vigilante boys and girls, we are teaching the youth that it is acceptable to pick up firearms and shoot people. That, after all, it is OK to pillage state funds while serving as a minister.

"I want to tell the rest of Ghanaians that it is about time we establish a proper committee backed by law that will help to determine who should earn a national award."
