The Director of Operations at the National Security Colonel Michael Opoku has discounted some of the evidence given by the head of the SWAT team at the Commission probing the chaos that characterized the Ayawaso by-election.

According to him, the long hours the SWAT team leader DSP Samuel Azugu spent answering questions before the commission might have blurred his ability to think straight and respond to matters.

“He was here was for about four hours and his thinking capability may have given him problems,” Colonel Opoku reacted to a question by the Commission’s lawyer on some claims of the SWAT leader.

He also rejected claims by DSP Azugu that the National Security operatives wore mask to avoid mosquito bites.

“The mosquito reason given by Azugu was just a joke. We wear mask to ensure that our operatives are not seen. So those who live within the area and are likely to be seen are masked”.

DSP Azugu who led the national security operatives at the by-election operation had told the commission he was yet know why his men wore mask at the Ayawaso by-election.

“On that particular day, those you saw in mask, I’m yet to know why they put on the mask. I’m to know why I must admit,” he told the Emile Short commission probing the violence that characterized the by election.

He also conceded that his men failed to act professionally during the by-election held on Thursday, 31 January, 2019.

DSP Azugu stated that his men treated Ghanaians and voters unprofessionally and failed to act according to the training that had been given them.

He added that his men fired only six warning shots and did not injure anybody during the by-election.
