The Communication Directorate of the NPP in the Northern Region has called on the NDC to disband vigilante groups and also hand over individuals who perpetuate lawlessness to the police in order to maintain peace in the region.

This call comes after some youth called “Aluta Boys”, allegedly affiliated to the NDC, stormed the party’s office to fire gunshots and also vandalize the party’s properties worth thousands.

Their attack is allegedly in connection with the suspension of some regional executives over the diversion of Ramadan sugar meant for party supporters in the region.

In reaction to this development, the NPP Communications Director, Sule Salifu, advised leaders of the party to call its supporters to order to ensure that peace is restored in the region especially when the country is faced with coronavirus pandemic.

Part of the statement reads “we call on the incompetent flagbearer of the NDC, Mr. John Dramani Mahama to call his party members to order and show leadership in the NDC. The government cannot continue to waste state resources to maintain law and order at the expense of other development priorities in the region.”

“The Communications Directorate of the NPP in the Northern Region wishes to condemn unreservedly, the Vandalism of the NDC Regional Secretariat and Gunshots fired by hoodlums of the party in the Tamale Metropolis today. We think it is about time the NDC comes out clear to disband their vigilante groups and handover names of those who perpetuated the lawlessness for prosecution.”

“The NPP urges the Ghana Police Service to commence full scale investigations into the disturbance and arrest those hooligans who fired the gunshots at the NDC party office this morning and ensure the law takes its full course to serve as deterrent to other miscreants in the NDC.” He added

Meanwhile, the Northern Regional Police Command has launched a manhunt for one Jalil who is believed to be the leader of “Aluta Boys” a vigilante group allegedly affiliated to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Northern region, in connection with the shooting at the party’s office.

The police appealed to the party supporters and residents to volunteer information to assist the police apprehend the suspects who attacked the party office.

Below is the full statement by the NPP:

The Communication Directorate of the NPP in the Northern Region wish to condemn unreservedly the Vandalism of the NDC Regional Secretariat and Gunshots fired by hoodlums of the party in the Tamale Metropolis today. We think it is about time the NDC comes out clear to disband their vigilante groups and handover names of those who perpetuated the lawlessness for prosecution.

The NPP government under the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his able Vice President, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia together with the Northern Regional Security Council laboured so much to restore permanent peace back to the region.

Therefore, we will not sit unconcern to watch the NDC undermine the peace people are enjoying and businesses thriving as a result of the numerous pro-poor social and people-centered policy interventions in the region and the country at large.

It is irresponsible on the part of the NDC and its incompetent leadership in the Region to cause another security crisis for the state at this crucial moment President Nana Akufo Addo together with Health Experts and the security apparatus are working tirelessly to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

The least the NDC can do is to support government in this global pandemic crisis and not engage in broad day thievery which has now culminated into violent confrontations among them. Ghana’s common enemy now is the coronavirus disease and as the President mentioned during one of his national broadcast, we must collectively fight the virus and not fight among ourselves.

We call on the incompetent flagbearer of the NDC, Mr. John Dramani Mahama to call his party members to order and show leadership in the NDC. The government cannot continue to waste state resources to maintain law and order at the expense of other development priorities in the region.

The NPP urges the Ghana Police Service to commence full scale investigations into the disturbance and arrest those hooligans who fired the gunshots at the NDC party office this morning and ensure the law takes its full course to serve as deterrent to other miscreants in the NDC.

Thank You.

Signed

Mr. Sule Salifu

NPP Communications Director
