Akufo-Addo behind Afoko’s suspension - Twum Boafo

“…all that is going on is at the direct behest of Nana Addo because if he doesn’t like it, all he needs to do is to say one phrase; stop it and it stops,” says Kojo Twum Boafo of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Kojo Twum Boafo was commenting on the suspension of Paul Afoko, National Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Paul Afoko was suspended on Friday after a National Executive Council meeting. Mr Freddie Blay, 1st Vice Chairman, is now acting as the Chairman.

Even though the actual reason for his suspension has not be given, many political pundits feel it is a wrong move for a political party who wants to win power in 2016.

Reacting to this in a panel discussion on Radio Gold, Kojo Twum Boafo said he is not surprised because “the signs have been on the wall for a long time”.

According to him, the fact that anytime issues like this crop up in the party and Nana Addo is not around is a “carefully contrived situation…”

“How does a flagbearer leave this country and a first national vice chairman who is a carry-over from the CPP…call a national council meeting and depose the chairman and the flagbearer of the party has issued a statement and accented to it. So this tells you about the calibre of leaders the NPP has…this is a man who is looking for power,” he said.

He added that, “the NPP has antecedents like most political parties…but what a good leader does is that you hold on to your party; encouraging people to eschew factionalism because at the end of day, what you want is to win power…never in the history of contemporary politics have there been this level of incompetence by any political leader…Nana Addo has decided that the all die be die mantra is the mantra that he wants to live with and so he is willing to destroy his party so far as he gets what he wants…

So in the unlikely event that there is a catastrophe and Nana Addo wins election in this 2016, this is what he is going to do with the 40 and something percent who didn’t vote for him; starting with some of us…any presidential candidate who thinks they can run an election without their national chairman and the general secretary clearly does not know anything about politics. But it is not that Nana Addo does not know anything about politics; it is the inner desire within him to seek vindictiveness no matter the cost…because Nana Addo was not in favour of Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong…”
