A third candidate in the National Democratic Congress flagbearer contest, Stephen Atubiga has also pulled out of the contest and called for support for former President John Dramani Mahama to lead the party to Election 2020.
He confirmed this through a letter presented to the General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia which was read at the party’s headquarters Tuesday.
According to him, that decision was arrived at after several consultations with party big wigs and public opinion leaders. For him, it was not a difficult decision to make since he had previously gone to prison for Mr. Mahama to become President.
He further debunked reports suggesting his withdrawal was as a result of financial restraints, insisting he had sufficient funds considering he is a rich man.
So far, two other hopefuls, Elikplim Agbemava and former Metropolitan Chief Executive of Kumasi, Mr Kojo Bonsu, have opted out of the race.
Mr Agbemava, in announcing his decision said he had decided to throw his weight behind the candidature of former president Mahama.
Mr Bonsu, on the other hand, in a statement, said the decision to opt out was as a result of “considerable deliberation and reflection”.
