Some utterances to profess doom has been rained on the Inspector General of Police, James Oppong-Boanuh, and Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, Jean Mensa.

This follows an invitation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to Bernard Mornah on Tuesday, June 2, 2020, to appear on allegations of inciting violence.

Mr Mornah who is the National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC) was summoned by the CID to question him over some utterances he made on the compilation of new voters’ register ahead of the December 2020 polls.

The PNC Chairman, however, had some individuals commiserating with him at the Police Headquarters in Accra with many calling for his immediate release.

One of his supporters, who was at the headquarters of CID was seen pouring libation around the area threatening that; “if the IGP does not let go of Bernard Mornah, the wrath of God will fall on him.”

The unknown man also took his turn to reign insults on the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa, and accused her of “conniving to throw the country into despair in the wake of the new voters’ registration exercise.”

Speaking in the Ga dialect he said, “Release him. Bring him to us so we take him away. If you refuse to release him, God will judge you. Jean Mensa, you want to plunge Ghana into chaos. If that is your plan, then we will help you because you are not acting smart.

If you are indeed smart, you wouldn’t insist that this voters’ register exercise takes place during this pandemic…We are ready to resist with our blood and Akufo-Addo would be held responsible for every life that is lost should there be any confusion. God will hear our cries. Whatever you [Akufo-Addo] are doing for your political gain will be futile. Know that your end is near,” the unknown supporter said in the video captured by GhanaWeb.

Since announcing its decision to acquire a new Biometric Voter Management System (BVMS) and compile a new voters register, the EC has received the support of some political parties, led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), while the Inter-Party Resistance Against the New Voters Register (IPRAN), which includes the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has kicked against the acquisition and the compilation.

Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his latest address to the nation in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, granted the Electoral Commission, the National Identification Authority, permission to go ahead with registrations despite calls to call off the exercise to mitigate the spread of the novel coronavirus.
