The Chairman of the National Peace Council, Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante is appalled by the bloody by-election that was held on Thursday.

The Ayawaso West Wuogon by election started peacefully and smoothly until heavily built masked men stormed the La Bawaleshie polling centre and started causing mayhem.

Several reports and bloody videos have emerged of the unfortunate incident while the main opposition parties in the country; National Democratic Congress and New Patriotic Party keep accusing and throwing jabs at each other.

The somehow botched by-election has led to the questioning of government’s intention and ability to protect the country’s democracy and its citizens especially when the Ghana Police Service claim they are not aware of the masked men who stormed the polling centre in the name of SWAT team.

Meanwhile, government and the police service are yet to get to the bottom of this issue.

Rev Prof Asante says the bloody incident has tainted our “democracy and our name as a peace-loving country”.

Contributing to a panel discussion on TV3’s programme; ‘The key point’, he further said the chaos was “uncalled for and must be condemned. The perpetrators must be brought to book…the videos are there, and we should be able to get them…we have the rule of law and so we should not have people behave the way they want to do”.

He also condemned the acts of vigilante groups and warned that if the political parties, government and the police service don’t put an end to their activities, it will harm the nation in the future.

“We are creating monsters and we need Ghanaians to come together to address it. We should not create monsters that will turn around and bite us,” he stated.
