CPP’s Delle ‘ashamed’ Ghana’s history being distorted

The Chairman and Leader of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Professor Edmun Nminyem Delle, has expressed disgust at attempts made some elements, especially the government, to distort Ghana’s history.

He said no Ghanaian needs second telling about who the founder of the country is.

He stresses that it is a historical fact worldwide that Dr Kwame Nkrumah, CPP’s Founder, is also the founder of Ghana.

For him, it is a shame for the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to change the history.

A legislation was passed on Tuesday, March 5 in Parliament to amend Ghana’s public holiday, scrapping September 21 as Founder’s Day. It has been changed into Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day.

Founders’ Day will from hence be celebrated on August 4, according to the amendments made to the Public Holidays Act, 2001 (Act 601).

Among other amendments is the celebration of January 7 as Constitution Day and the scrapping of May 25 and July 1 as AU Day and Republic Day respectively.

These, Prof Delle considers, a sad reflection of history.

“Let us even reflect on what is happening in Parliament, where history is being distorted,” he said on TV3’s morning show, New Day, on Wednesday.

“We feel a bit ashamed that something which is a historical fact, this government wants to change it.”

The Minority in Parliament has, however, indicated that it will reverse the decisions when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) reclaims power.

The MPs of that caucus walked out on discussions and passage of the amendment bill laid before the House by the Minister of Interior.
