Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has described his tenure as Minister of Education as the most challenging period in his political career.

The former Minister, widely known as NAPO, reflected on his time leading the Education and Energy Ministries, offering insights into the distinct demands of each role.

“Serving as Minister of Education was a tough assignment,” NAPO admitted during an interview with Umaru Sanda on Channel One.

“It wasn’t an enjoyable experience because of how demanding the role was, but it was also incredibly impactful. I left with the satisfaction of having introduced meaningful changes to the sector.”

During his time at the Ministry of Education, NAPO spearheaded several transformative initiatives, most notably the implementation of the Free Senior High School policy.

While the program expanded access to secondary education, it also came with significant logistical and financial challenges that tested his leadership.

Reflecting on his role, NAPO noted that the ministry’s broad scope and its direct impact on the lives of millions of students, parents, and educators made it uniquely challenging.

“The scale of the work and the stakes involved made it more demanding than my time at the Ministry of Energy,” he said.

NAPO’s time as Energy Minister, by contrast, was marked by strides in stabilizing power supply and introducing policies to expand access to energy in underserved areas.

While the Energy Ministry came with its own set of challenges, NAPO described it as more technical and manageable compared to the multifaceted demands of the Education Ministry.

Despite the difficulties, NAPO expressed pride in his contributions to both ministries. “I believe I was able to bring innovative perspectives to both roles, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve,” he said.
