Stephen Kwaku Asare a US-based legal practitioner and accounting professor popularly known on Facebook as Kwaku Azar is advising President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to emulate persons like President Kufuor who during his two terms never renamed any public university.
Kwaku Azar who is on a crusade against plans to rename the University Ghana, says that his demand is for the government to remain true to the ideals of the party which has always been against the personification of the universities and resisted the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
In a post on his Facebook page sighted by MyNewsGh.com he said “I am only asking the government to remain true to the ideals of the party. The party has always been against the personification of the universities and resisted KNUST.
NLC changed KNUST to UST and PP did not restore it because it supported the change. KNUST was restored by Rawlings in 1998.
Kufuor did not rename any university in 8 years. He facilitated the setting up of Busia Institute for Rural and Democratic Development (BIRDD). That’s how heroes are honoured not by renaming public universities. The government should stay away from UG or risk catastrophic consequences”.
Deputy Information Minister Pious Enam Hadzide has said he will not be surprised if the University of Ghana (UG) is renamed after the late Ghanaian statesman Joseph Boakye Danquah.
“I’ll not be surprised, I’ve done some reading and I would actually be excited that such doyen not only of African politics, not only Ghanaian politics but indeed international politics, a true blaze as far as the amplification of the African voice is concern. I would be quite excited that the governing council will make that consideration. However, I’m not aware that at this moment that consideration is being laid I’m not a member of the board…”
But a senior lecturer at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Dr. Michael Ayamga Adongo has however taken on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over his renaming spree.
The Development Economist advised the President against what he termed as honour grabbing adding with the renaming of national assets after deserving citizens without broader consultation.
