The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Dacosta Aboagye, has disbursed GH¢200 million for claim payments to support free dialysis for kidney patients at health facilities.

This fulfills a promise made by the government and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to include kidney dialysis treatment under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

As a result, kidney patients in the country will not be required to pay any money when they visit accredited health facilities for treatment under the NHIS.

According to Dr. Dacosta Aboagye, 20 health facilities have been accredited across the country to provide the dialysis treatment for the patients.

He mentioned that staff of NHIS have been dispatched to each of the facilities to assist kidney dialysis patients.

“The free dialysis treatment officially starts today, December 1, 2024, in twenty (20) NHIS credentialed facilities across the country. NHIS staff will be in each of these centers to assist kidney dialysis patients,” he wrote in a Facebook post on December 1, 2024.

Dr. Dacosta Aboagye added that refunds will be given to patients who are charged by the health facilities.

“If a hospital mistakenly charges a patient, a full refund will be issued to the patient. Meanwhile, the NHIS has released over 200 million to facilities nationwide for claims payments,” he added.

The free dialysis treatment under the NHIS officially begins on December 1, 2024.
