The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Tamale North Constituency, Alhaji Alhassan Suhuyini, has expressed gross disappointment about the ‘dirty titles’ Ghana has earned for itself on the international front under the watch of the ruling Akufo-Addo government.

Speaking on Joynews’ Newsfile program about the upsurge of strange murder cases in the country, Mr, Suhuyini said the NPP has failed to honor its promise of keeping Ghanaians safe.

For a government who spoke assuredly on safeguarding the security of the populace he said, they have not only miscarried but also succeeded in soiling the hard earned reputation of the country to the rest of the world.

“Never has Ghana been hit with very disgraceful and embarrassing headlines within such a short period of time; 2 years, international headlines, embarrassing international headlines, never before”.

“You recall the speech theft by our president, it gave us international headlines we were all not proud of, the Australian Commonwealth games, embarrassing, Oslo Norway Chancery, international headlines that were not palatable and then the number 12 expose which has led to this matter”.

“How long will we continue to tolerate this international embarrassment? Can’t something be done about these negative headlines we are attracting? What are the long term consequences on the image of Ghana if we continue on this line?” he quizzed.

Citing previous ‘safety messages’ propagated by the NPP during their campaign in 2016, he said the NPP swore that under its watch,

“Ghanaians will feel safe on the roads and in their homes. Ghanaians will go about their daily business in the secure knowledge that their persons, properties and lives are safe under an NPP government”.
These pledges however he maintains, have been constantly unsatisfied.

“For me, I am particularly disappointed in the government and in our security agencies considering the expectations that many people had given the promises that were made to them before our last elections. I’m saying so because security has always been a concern to us and so you cannot compartmentalize a discussion of it and blame one regime but if an expectation is given; that we know the situation and so when we come we’ll do something better about it and what you get is what we currently have, then it is fair to be disappointed…..to say I’m disappointed is because I was promised as a Ghanaian”.

“We all know that some of the things that have happened and are happening, you still wonder if we are dealing with it in a way that it should be dealt with”, he added.

Mr. Suhuyini consoled the family of Ahmed and the Tiger Eye team, cautioning however that the insecurity issues of the country should be wholly considered and urgently tackled.
“I pray the almighty Allah touches the heart of family members to accept His will and especially to the team at Tiger Eye and Ahmed Hussein, I wish to extend my deepest condolences to them”.

“If you focus only on Ahmed’s thing, you’ll be ignoring the general insecurity that we are facing in this country”.

Background

The country has been hit in recent times by several bizzare deaths of some prominent persons. The death of Mankralo [caretaker chief] of Prampram, Nene Atsure Benta III, in his car in December, the stabbing of Head Pastor of the Central Assemblies of God Church at Tema Community Four, Rev Dr David in his office, the shooting of Manager of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Joseph Miigaai Jakperuk by unknown assailants in the East Mamprusi District of the Northern Region, the murder of Ghana Ports and Habors Authority Public Relations Manager, Josephine Asante in her room and most recently, the assassination of Tiger Eye member, Ahmed Hussein-Suale in his car.

Following these deaths, Ghanaians and several civil service organisations have called on the nation’s security agencies, the IGP and government to intervene to curb these occurrences.
