HAWA YAKUBU: Tribute

A unique and exciting personality, an individual with a first-class experience in contemporary Ghanaian politics. A politician who knew the importance of the four (4) pillars of politics (a) policy (b) planning (c) organization, and (d) delivery (speech). She was the catalyst who set in motion a series of interconnected events that gave a revolutionary twist to the NPP. She played a part in all that mattered in the NPP since she joined the Party.
She did not only argue her way to the top to become a Parliamentarian on the Party’s ticket on two occasions but as well as a Minister, Member of the ECOWAS Community and just a year ago won massively to become the Party’s Vice-Chairman. Her quick mind led her up through the NPP ranks to get elected as the Party’s Vice-Chairman. She was a hard worker and notoriously lucky politician.
In opposition she stood firm and her witty speeches in the House many a time was considered a surprise by many. No wonder in 2000, when the NPP won both the Presidential and Parliamentary election she was made a Cabinet Minister.
Hawa established a track record of an effective “trouble shooter” for the Party and played a key role in the recent radical transformation, particularly growth and concern for the youth and women in the Party.
Looking ahead Hawa would have made the present leadership-race in the NPP very interesting, I am more than convinced she would have contested but for her untimely death.
Hawa always welcomed ideas from everyone, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, faith or disability. The Party has lost a leader, the Nation has lost a promising leader and Africa has lost a great nationalist – a Pan - Africanist.
