Hearts of Oak's struggles due to poor scouting and neglect of legends - Prince Tagoe

Former Black Stars player, Prince Tagoe, attributes Accra Hearts of Oak's poor performance to imprudent management by the club’s board members.

He pointed out that the board's failure to involve some of the club's legends in the technical team to inspire the players has contributed to the recent struggles.

Tagoe criticized the club's poor recruitment strategy, particularly in scouting, which is limited to certain areas, preventing them from acquiring the best players for the team.

In an interview with 3FM, Tagoe urged the board members to revamp their recruitment strategy and involve the legends in club activities.

“The problem we are facing is due to the current management board. Many of them don’t really know what they are doing. When a team like Hearts of Oak has so many legends, having them around would motivate the young players because they have done it before. But when you push them away and rely on others, it doesn’t help.

“Scouting is an issue because, in the past, they cast their nets wide to find players, not just in Accra. If we depend only on local talent without looking for raw talent outside Accra, it’s going to be a problem. We will always end up buying players from just the middle teams, which is not right because those teams also want to sell their players through their clubs,” he said.

Accra Hearts of Oak have been struggling in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) for the past three seasons, failing to win the league or other major trophies.

During the 2024/25 GPL season, the Phobia club battled relegation for most of the season and only survived after the last matchday game.

Several legends have raised concerns about the club’s poor performance and have called on the board members to implement measures to restore the club’s glory, as it is one of the most successful sides from Ghana on the African continent.
