Broadcaster Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah has provided details regarding his recent arrest by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
Speaking on his show, For the Records, on Saturday, March 22, 2025, the broadcaster revealed that he was aware of his impending arrest by the NIB, having received a tip-off from a trusted source.
However, he mentioned that the exact day of his arrest by the security operatives was not disclosed to him.
“I went to write an exam on Wednesday and prior to that I came to inform you three weeks ago that the National Security were after me but people doubted me. The evidence is there to show. On my way home after the exam, I received intel from my source informing me of my potential arrest but he didn’t specifically say when that would happen. I was already aware of my arrest,” he stated.
Okatakyie further revealed that on the day of his arrest, he noticed a Benz vehicle tailing and following him closely.
He added that his arrest took place on the road after he made a turn at Christian Village in Accra, where he was ambushed by security operatives in several pickup trucks.
“There was a Benz car that was spying on me which I spotted. On my way I intentionally made pit stops at certain places to see if they were truly following me which they were. Immediately I branched at Christian Village, several pickups with sirens arrived and stopped us,” he continued.
The broadcaster also mentioned that his request to contact his lawyer was denied, explaining that the operatives allegedly failed to present a warrant authorising his arrest.
“I sat down in my car quietly when one of the men clocked his gun, causing a scene. They told me to move without showing a warrant for the arrest. I asked to call my lawyer and they declined. They took me to the BNI office in Kawukudi,” he recounted.
The host of For the Records was taken into custody on Wednesday, March 19, under unclear circumstances, prompting the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to condemn the action as an attack on democracy.
