President-elect John Dramani Mahama has pledged to launch investigations into the deaths recorded during the just-ended general elections on December 7, 2024.

Speaking during a visit by EU Ambassador Irchad Razaaly on December 12, 2024, Mahama stated that while the elections were successful, the violence and deaths recorded during the process marred the overall outcome.

He emphasised that these deaths should not go unaccounted for and pledged to look into the circumstances surrounding them if the outgoing government fails to take action.

Mahama further stated that anyone found responsible for the deaths would be held fully accountable and face the full extent of the law.

“I want to thank you for the support before, during, and after the elections. The technical support and also how the EU during the election was one of the biggest observer missions, and I think it helped to create the successful outcome of the election that we held. We are happy about the smooth, successful election that we had. Unfortunately, there were a few incidents and deaths that have marred it,” he said.

He added, “It is our intention to investigate what led to the deaths of those people, and if people are culpable, they need to pay the price for what they have done. As soon as things settle, I hope this government will start to investigate these incidents, but if it doesn’t happen, we will do it as soon as we come into office…”

The just-ended December 7, 2024, general elections of Ghana were marred by pockets of violence across the country, just like the December 7, 2020, election.

There were a number of shooting incidents that led to at least four deaths and several others sustaining injuries during the electoral process, particularly during the collation of results for the election.

The deaths occurred in Kasoa in the Awutu Senya East constituency, Nyankpala in the Tolon constituency, and Damongo in the Savannah Region.
