The Inspector General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has expressed worry over the surge in illegal mining activities in the country popularly known as galamsey.

He noted that such individuals involved in such activities carry out attacks on civilians including forest guards without any justification

According to a report by myjoyonline.com, he made these remarks while speaking at a Regional Police Commanders' Conference on Friday, March 21, 2025.

He charged Regional Commanders to step up their efforts to tackle the menace, underscoring its impact on the environment.

"This lawlessness must not be allowed to continue. We are declaring war on illegal mining, and I expect every regional commander to take decisive action, to bring perpetrators to justice," he stated.

As part of government’s effort to fight illegal mining, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, announced on March 17, 2025, the commencement of a four-week training program for the first batch of 460 Blue Water Guards.
