The 2024 presidential candidate for the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Rev. Christian Kwabena Andrews, popularly known as Osofo Kyiri Abosom, has declared that if elected president and able to have his way, he would reduce the number of parliamentarians in Ghana from 275 to 16.

According to Rev. Andrews, each of Ghana’s sixteen regions is already overseen by a regional minister who manages regional affairs.

He argues that reducing the number of parliamentarians to one per region would significantly reduce the budget spent on MPs’ salaries and allowances.

“If I become president, I will reduce the number of parliamentarians to 16 because we have 16 regions, each represented by a regional minister. So, why can’t we govern the country with just 16 parliamentarians?” he questioned.

Speaking during a press conference on November 9, 2024, at his church premises in Accra, he urged Ghanaians to consider voting for him in the upcoming elections, promising to revitalize the country.

Rev. Andrews further criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, as well as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) led by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

He argued that both parties have failed to offer meaningful solutions for Ghana’s progress, urging voters to reject them in the December 7 elections.

“These two parties only seek to benefit from the state when they’re in power,” he stated during the press conference.

“NDC and NPP have nothing to offer the country. Mahama has no vision; he only wants to return to power to enjoy state benefits. I’m sure he left something at Jubilee House, and that’s why he wants to come back,” he said.

Osofo Kyiri Abosom urged Ghanaians to see through what he called the “empty promises” of both parties and to give him the mandate to lead the nation toward a brighter future.
