The Gomoa Central Member of Parliament, Kwame Asare Obeng, has shared insights into his relationship with Kennedy Agyapong, the former Member of Parliament of Assin Central.
According to the lawmaker, their relationship is based on mutual respect, with Kennedy Agyapong offering support when he faced issues with certain individuals within the New Patriotic Party at a particular time.
“The only reason I attended that meeting was because of Kennedy Agyapong. He is a good guy. You may have your own issues with him but he is a great guy. He is a man who will be there for you in times of need,” he said during an interview on Joy FM on Friday, January 10, 2025.
A Plus, as he is widely known, disclosed that Kennedy Agyapong intervened on his behalf during a fallout with the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
He claimed that some members of the NPP devised a plan to have him jailed, specifically alleging that Chairman Wontumi was behind the orchestration of the scheme.
“There was a time where some members of the NPP had a plan to jail me. The morning before I went to court, I was prepared and told my kids it was possible I will be going to jail that day. Chairman Wontumi was part of that plan to put us in jail,” he explained.
A Plus shared that upon learning of the situation, Kennedy Agyapong left the United States and traveled to Ghana the morning before his court appearance to help him.
He asserted that his prosecution and potential jail time were averted due to Agyapong's intervention.
“The morning before we went to court, I got a call from Kennedy Agyapong who said ‘I am leaving America and coming to Ghana the next day because I don’t understand what is going on.’ He actually stopped everything and flew back to Ghana, so, if Kennedy Agyapong calls me at any time, I have to be there to listen to him,” he stated.
The lawmaker further said that his decision to engage in discussions and meetings with the NPP regarding a potential alignment with their caucus in Parliament was influenced by his respect for and his relationship with Kennedy Agyapong.
“Even though I wrote on Facebook that my heart is aligning with the NDC, I had to listen to Kennedy. He is a great guy because he will be there for you. He is a friend’s friend, brother’s brother and will be there for you,” he said.
