President Akufo-Addo has charged final year students and first beneficiaries of his flagship Free Senior High School programme to make him proud by passing decisively, their upcoming final exams scheduled for May and June 2020.
Addressing the Management and the students body of the St. Mary’s Senior High School in the Ablekuma South Constituency during a stopover as part of the second day of his three day tour of the Greater Accra Region, President Akufo-Addo said political forces have been opposed to the policy but the students have a perfect opportunity to justify the programme through a sterling performance in the upcoming examinations.
“It is not everyone in this country that is happy about this free senior high school policy that the NPP government and I are pursuing. There are political forces in our country that are strongly opposed to the policy. They began by saying that it was a gimic. They then said that it could not be done for another twenty years.
“They then said it was too expensive and now they are telling us that when they come back to power, only God knows when they are going to review it. The word review means cancel” President Akufo-Addo said.
“The people of Ghana are not going to stand by and watch these dreams come back to power,” the President added.
“What I am hoping for and I am sure you will fulfill, is that in the exams that you are going to do in May and June next year, conduct yourself in such a way that everybody will see that indeed the free senior high school policy is a positive policy for the country and shame all the detractors and those who did not want it to happen” President Akufo-Addo said.
Headmistress of the St Mary’s School, Mrs Grace Mansa Eshun in her remarks noted that the final year students are preparing very hard to ensure that they pass their final exams as is expected of them. She requested of the President to assist the school with a sixty six or thirty-three seater bus, reenforcement of the fence walls of the school to prevent intruders who come into the schools compound to engage in undesirable activities and the covering of an open storm drain which runs through the campus which she says is a security threat to students.
President Akufo-Addo in response to the three major requests of the headmistress said he commits to same and he will ensure that within the next few months, the school will have all the three needs sorted out.
“Madam Headmistress, rest assured the stronger fence wall, the covering of the storm drain and the bus are all going to be here within the next two or three months ahead of us” President Akufo-Addo indicated.
