New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Subin Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Eugene Boakye Antwi has indicated that he will sue former president John Dramani Mahama in the Supreme Court for his plans to contest election 2020.
The suit according to him will seek an interpretation on the eligibility of the former president to contest for the presidency in the 2020 elections.
Former president John Dramani Mahama last week announced his intention to contest for the flagbearership slot of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and subsequently contest for the country’s presidency in the 2020 elections.
But there are concerns about his eligibility with Political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampoh advising the former president to seek legal advice on his eligibility before continuing with his ambitions.
Speaking on an Accra-based local television station and monitored by MyNewsGh.com, Mr. Boakye Antwi who also doubles as the Deputy Minister for Works and Housing said having been president and retired and is enjoying all the benefits due a former president as prescribed by the constitution of the country, he believes Mr. Mahama may not be eligible to contest elections in the country, particularly for the presidency.
According to him, he will head to the apex court of the country very soon to ensure that the questions being raised about Mr. Mahama’s eligibility are made clear, going forward.
