Prempeh College, others cited for charging unapproved fees

Five heads of Senior High Schools in the Ashanti Region are due to appear before the Director- General of the Ghana Education Service to answer allegations of charging unapproved fees.

The five schools are Prempeh College, Opoku Ware Senior High School, Yaa Asantewaa Girls SHS, Aduman SHS and SIMS College.

They are charging up to about 1,500 Ghana cedis instead of a GES approved fee of 700 boarding students and 500 Ghana cedis for Day students.

The GES has had to intervene after public outcry against high school fees for newly admitted students in various second cycle institutions.

The Ashanti Regional Directorate revealed that in a meeting with school heads, they agreed on the provisional fees.

They also agreed that other items on their prospectus should be shifted to second and third term in order not to overburden parents.

But on returning to their various campuses, the school heads ignored the directive.

The GES Regional Directorate has cited them for breaching a directive restraining school authorities from imposing high fees for newly-admitted students.

The Directorate says a committee will be set up to come out with disciplinary measures.
