The deputy general secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Otokunor, has claimed that President Akufo-Addo almost appointed Nana Appiah Mensah as business development minister.
ETVghana reports that speaking on Happy FM, Otokunor stated that Mensah, who is the chief executive officer (CEO) of Menzgold Ghana Limited, frequently went on business trips with the president.
He added that it implied the president knew the nature of Mensah’s business and was in support of it.
According to him, the president again endorsed Mensah’s work on Facebook, a social media platform.
Otokunor, however, went on to say that the tax payer’s money should not be used to pay Menzgold’s clients.
In his opinion, the president and his team should bear full responsibility for the current predicament of the customers.
The government has however indicated its unwillingness to provide funds to pay back the investments of Menzgold clients.
The minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, explained that the customers failed to heed to the several warnings given by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
On Wednesday, January 9, 2019, a court issued a warrant for Mensah’s arrest, for allegedly “defrauding by false pretence” while operating his gold firm.
