An aspiring flag bearer of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alban Bagbin, has asked President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to immediately remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante-Apeatu from office over what he describes as the insecurity in the country.

“Fire the IGP if he is not up to his task,” Mr Bagbin said on Ghana Kasa on CTV hosted by Kwame Tutu on Friday, 15 February 2019.

He added: “if he [IGP] is under-resourced, then retool him to facilitate his operations.”

Mr Bagbin also said that the entire security apparatus in the country must be resourced to enable them deal effectively with crime.

His comments follow the violence that characterised the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency on Thursday, 31 January.

A Commission of Inquiry headed by a former Commissioner at the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Justice Emile Short, was set by the government to probe the matter.

Commenting on the current state of the NDC, Mr Bagbin said the way and manner the Mahama administration treated the party by neglecting its structures is something that should not recur when an NDC government is in power.

“I am not happy about the state of the NDC and the kind of services we offer,” he said.

“The government of the day was not working with the party structure and if your party is not in good health, your government cannot be in good health because it is the party that metamorphoses into government”, the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament and MP Nadowli Kaleo added.
