Mercedes Benz bus drivers in Salaga in the East Gonja district have devised their own ways of driving at night by using torch light instead of using headlights because their vehicles are old and do not meet Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) requirements
Recent accidents recorded between the Salaga-Tamale roads have claimed several lives leaving several others seriously injured and battling with their lives; all as a result of driver’s not working on their headlights.
In an interview with one of the drivers at the GPRTU station in Salaga, the driver stated that vehicle owners are only interested in their sales and not the conditions of the buses and are always greeted with threats each time they complain.
According to him, it is from the use of the vehicles they are also able to fend for their families and for fear of being put out of job, have decided to remain quiet over the dangerous development.
“The police who are supposed to ensure every car has light are also interested in the one Ghana cedi he will take” he alleged.
It appears the salaga district police has given no attention to such issues when ever such instances were reported to them and have made drivers of such buses to risk lives of their passengers by resorting to torch light.
