The Ghana Railway Workers Union and the Association of Railway Senior Officers have appealed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to intervene in the alleged impasse between the government and the Ghana Manganese Company that has led to the latter suspending its operations since the first week of December 2019.

In a statement signed by the General Secretary of the Ghana Railway Workers, Mr Godwill Ntarmah, the union said: “We wish to inform His Excellency that the main revenue stay of the Ghana Railway Co. Ltd now is the haulage of Manganese ore from Nsuta to the Takoradi Port and with this suspension, GRCL’s operation has virtually come to a halt”.

The statement revealed that the GRCL had to apply for an overdraft facility at the bank, which is yet to materialise, before it can pay the December 2019 salaries of the workers.

“This is not sustainable going forward and, therefore, the earlier the Manganese operation comes on board, the better for GRCL”, the workers said, adding: “As the father of the nation, we have every conviction that once the President intervenes, the issue will be resolved amicably and speedily to save GRCL and its workers as well as dependents from massive suffering”.
