Government has awarded the Sunyani Airport to two contractors and rehabilitation work has started in earnest.
The contract sum is about GH¢50m according to Deputy Aviation Minister Yaw Afful who is also MP for Jaman South.
The companies, DAA Construction is supposed to build a fence wall around the airport while Resources Access Limited ( RAL) is doing rehabilitation including resurfacing and extension of the runway as well as separate the departure hall from the arrival hall, a car park among others.
The Deputy Minister paid a working visit to the site to supervise ongoing works last week.
He said that the contract duration is six months and all contractors are to finish work within stipulated time.
“They are supposed to finish work and hand over by end of January next year and the contract sum is GH¢50 million,” he confirmed.
He said the government is determined to lift the Sunyani Airport and others to modern standards to make air travel more attractive within the country.
Maxwell Yeboah, the airport manager affirmed to Daily Guide via telephone that the project is expected to be completed by January next year.
He denied media reports that the airport has been closed down totally and said although commercial flights are operating currently, chartered flights do come to the airport.
sHe said the rehabilitation works are in two phases with the first being the construction of a fence wall around the airport to check encroachment, adding “When completed it would enhance the security of the airport.”
“The second phase is rehabilitation of the whole airport and this includes resurfacing the runway that has developed potholes, increase the length of the runway and expand the airport parking base. It also includes separating arrival hall from the departure hall.”
