President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s Founders’ Day message on August 4, 2024, has again brought back the debate on whether Ghana has founders or a founder, in the person of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

President Akufo-Addo said that while Dr. Kwame Nkrumah played an integral role in the country’s drive towards independence, it is erroneous and untenable to accord him the privilege of being the only founder of Ghana.

“I speak to you this evening, rejecting completely the notion that Ghana was founded by one man. While Kwame Nkrumah’s contributions to our independence are undeniable, it is important to acknowledge that the struggle for our nation’s freedom was a collective effort spanning several generations,” the president said in his broadcast.

But it appears Ghanaians settled the debate long ago.

A rare video shared by Ghana Facts & History on X on Monday, August 5, 2024, showed many Ghanaians celebrating Nkrumah as the Founder of Ghana in 1964.

The video showed soldiers, women’s groups, and children marching at the Black Star Square in honour of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president.

Some of the people in the video could be seen holding placards with messages of praise for Nkrumah for gaining independence for the country and his effort to liberate the entire Africa.

One of the placards read, "Nkrumah Forever."
