We are disappointed in Akufo-Addo - Volta NDC

The Volta Regional branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it is disappointed in the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, because it had brought severe hardship to bear on the masses.

According to the opposition party, due to poor economic management, the International Management Fund (IMF) recently ranked the Ghanaian cedi as the worst performing currency in the world, stressing that the economy is in shambles.

Addressing a press conference in Ho, the Chairman of the Volta Regional Communication Committee of the party, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said the NDC members were good managers of the economy.

According to him, when the economy almost crumbled in 1983, it was the then Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), which is now the NDC, that turned things around, and that they would do same in 2021 when Ghanaians vote for the party.

Mr. Okudzeto Ablakwa said the NDC in the Volta Region was very concerned about the projects started by the NDC, but which have been abandoned by the current government.

He mentioned some of these projects as the dual carriage road started by former President John Dramani Mahama from Sokode to Ho, an aerodrome which has not been put to use, and five district water projects among others.

He said the people of the Volta Region must also benefit from the national cake.

Okudzeto regretted that instead of bringing the needed development to the region, the government had now occupied itself with how to spend huge sums of money to compile a new voters register.

The North Tongu Member of Parliament (MP) pointed out that the NDC in the Volta Region is not in support of a new voters register because of the past utterances of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia that the voter register in the Volta Region was full of foreigners who had been voting.

He stressed that the NDC in the region was not happy with such statements and is prepared to join other regions to demonstrate against the new register through the principal streets of Ho.

To him, the Volta Region is not the only region in Ghana with borders, therefore, would not tolerate any acts of intimidation.

The Volta NDC also sent a strong caution to the government to desist from attempts to use the National Identification Cards in the 2020 general elections, as being expressed in some quarters, because it was not satisfied with the activities of the National Identification Authority (NIA).

The Volta Regional Chairman of the party, Mr. Henry Ametepe, said the NDC was preparing to take over power from the NPP in the 2020 general elections, as the people of the region have seen the NDC as a better alternative.

The Regional Chairman said he was still going through widowhood rites and that he would soon put on his full political attire and embark on serious campaigning.

The Member of Parliament for Ho Central, Mr. Benjamin Kpodo, said he was happy that, at least, the ruling government had seen the depreciation of the cedi and formed what he described as historic forty-member committee to a find solution to the problem.

He, however, regretted that he was added to the committee without anyone informing him.

Mr. Kpodo, therefore, announced that he would not serve on the forty-member committee, because he vividly remembered that the government was duly invited to deliberate on measures to address the rapid depreciation of the cedi at Akosombo, but refused, which made the cedi lose value by 46 percent.

The Ho Central MP also described the Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa, as the worst Minister ever seen in the history of the region, but commended the Chieftaincy Minister, Mr. Samuel Kofi Dzamesi, who was the last NPP Regional Minister, for his quality leadership.
