The Sales Manager of Z Autos Ghana Limited, a car dealership in Accra, Bernice Debiri, has cautioned against purchasing a Ghana-used car.

A Ghana-used car is a car that has been driven in Ghana for a certain period of time.

According to her, cars that have been driven in Ghana for some time may have certain challenges that may not be directly disclosed when the car is bought.

“Don’t buy Ghana-used cars. Because most of the people that sell Ghana-used cars have issues with them that keep surfacing, and they want to get rid of it, and buy a new one. So, they will just sell it, top up and buy a new one,” she said on BizTech on GhanaWeb TV.

She also lamented the number of taxes that they pay when they import cars into the country. 

Bernice noted that these taxes accumulate to about 25% of the cost of the cars they purchase.

She explained that buying cars abroad is not a challenge, as the prices do not fluctuate often. Instead, when the cars arrive in the country, the value increases due to the cedi.

"For instance, when someone asks for the price of a car today and returns later to purchase it, the value in dollars remains the same, but its cedi equivalent would have increased astronomically. This poses a challenge to us and affects sales," she noted.

She urged the Bank of Ghana and government to provide a flat rate for doing business in the country to avoid misunderstandings that arise because of the different rates provided.
