Ghanaian economist and businessman Dr. Kofi Amoah has criticized former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong for prioritizing his loyalty to the party over the country.
Despite his criticism of the government and his party's failures, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central joined the party leadership in Kumasi on Tuesday for the unveiling of the party’s running mate for the 2024 general election, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.
During an address to party faithful, Kennedy Agyapong stressed his decision to support the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, emphasizing his fidelity to the NPP.
"Some people were upset with me during my recent visit to Kumasi. I want to remind my supporters that loyalty to the party supersedes personal sentiments. As long as I remain in the NPP, I will actively participate in the party’s activities. If you want to be a leader, you must first be a servant of the people," the MP wrote in a later post on X.
Reacting to Kennedy Agyapong’s post, Dr. Amoah stated that one has no right to leadership if they prioritize the interests of their political party over that of their country.
"Anyone who puts a political party over the country cannot lead the people out of their sufferings, especially if those sufferings have been imposed by that particular party. Allegiance must be to the country and to the people, not to a party," he said.
"Folks, advise yourselves. You cannot be taken advantage of forever," he stated.
