That is not salary or ex-gratia. What Akufo Addo wanted was recognition of his and Bawumia’s wives’ ‘work’ and be salaried as officials under article 71. By virtue of marriage to a President and Vice President does not make them employees of the state. Their husbands receive allowances for the running of their official duties which includes support from their wives, hosting their husbands’ visitors etc. Rebecca and Samira returned in anger the money given to them from their husbands’ official duty related allowances which they were entitled to as every President’s wife is. That was their decision, no one asked them to return what they, like every President’s wife across the world is entitled to. Lordina does not have to return any allowances she received as the President’s wife when her husband was running the country. She was not an employee and her husband did not seek to make her an employee of the state!!!
