President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to accountability and responsible leadership, urging public officials to recognize the weight of the trust placed in them by the people.
Speaking during an engagement with the Ghanaian community in Ethiopia on Monday, February 17, 2025, he emphasized that those in leadership must lead by example and be willing to answer to the citizens they serve.
"Those of us in leadership must lead by example. We must be prepared to be held accountable for the public trust," President Mahama stated.
"If you accept a role in the public sector, then you must be prepared to answer to the people because it is the people who put you there. You serve at their pleasure."
He acknowledged the excitement surrounding new appointments but cautioned that every public office comes with significant responsibility.
"Everybody is excited and running—‘Have you got a green letter from the president?’ The green letter comes. But the green letter comes with a lot of responsibility and expectation," he added.
President John Dramani Mahama also stressed that while his administration will hold past leaders accountable, it is equally important for current officials to recognize that they, too, will be judged by their actions.
"And I have said that while we hold those who came before us accountable, we should remember that we, too, will be held to account in the same way," he noted.
Outlining his administration’s priorities, he emphasised constitutional amendments, strengthening public trust, stabilizing the economy, and creating job opportunities for young people.
He acknowledged that while the process of reform may not be completed during his tenure, laying a solid foundation for future leaders remains his goal.
“And so, amending the constitution, holding people accountable for the public trust, and ensuring we stabilize the economy and create opportunities for our young people to work as quickly as possible—that is the task ahead of us,” he said.
"We may not be able to complete the process, but at the very least, I am determined to lay the foundation and put Ghana on the right track so that whoever takes over can continue and consolidate it," President Mahama affirmed.
