Canadian-born Ghanaian winger Stephen Afrifa found the net for Sporting Kansas City in their 2-1 loss to Deportivo Toluca FC in the Leagues Cup 2024 group stage finale on Monday at Children’s Mercy Park.
Afrifa, who started the match and played for 60 minutes, scored an impressive equalizer just before halftime, levelling the score at 1-1.
Despite his effort, Toluca's goals from Jesus Angulo and Maximiliano Araujo secured their victory and top spot in West Region Group 4.
Sporting Kansas City struggled against Toluca’s dominance in possession, with the hosts managing more shots on goal but ultimately falling short.
The result means Toluca leads the head-to-head record with two wins over Sporting Kansas City's two victories and no draws.
Despite the defeat, Sporting Kansas City advances to the Leagues Cup knockout stage, finishing second in their group.
They will face defending MLS Cup champions Columbus Crew in the Round of 32 on Friday at Lower.com Field.
