Former Black Stars striker, Asamoah Gyan, scored in Sunderland's memorable win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge 14 years ago today, November 14, 2024.
Nedum Onuoha, Asamoah Gyan, and Danny Welbeck inspired the Black Cats to end Chelsea's 100% home record in the 2010/2011 season.
Gyan scored the second of the night after being put through by Jordan Henderson. The Ghanaian set himself up with a good first touch that took him into the box before finding the far post with a finessed inside foot shot, beating Petr Cech.
He ran towards the travelling fans and pulled off his trademark dance celebration. The build-up to the goal, the expert finish, and the celebration make the goal indelible.
Asamoah Gyan doubled the lead for the visitors after Onuoha had given them a first-half lead. Danny Welbeck completed the iconic win in the 87th minute to secure the 3-0 victory.
The Black Stars' all-time top scorer is regarded as a cult hero at Sunderland after becoming the fans' favourite during his short spell at the club. He scored 10 goals in 34 appearances before his move to Al-Ain in UAE.
