All is now set for the commencement of the third Ghana National Race Walking Cup in the Central regional capital of Cape Coast on Saturday, 29th April 2006.
The event is aimed at selecting walkers from all the ten regions to represent the nation at this year?s world walking cup, slated for the Spanish city of La-coruna on the 13th and 14th May 2006 and later to Mauritius in the month of August for the African championship.
The first of this sort of event took place in Takoradi in the year 1997, Cape Coast was chosen for the second in the series in the year 2005, and has again been selected for the third event. Categories to be competed in include, 20k and 50k men, 20k women. The junior category will see the age groups of 13,15 and 19 respectively in contention for honors in their respective groups.
Barclays bank in Cape Coast has been earmarked as the starting point of the race. Competitors will from there, pass in front of the Cape Coast Castle thence to the Victoria Park and back to the Bank. This process will be continued until the prescribed distance is covered. Individuals who will be selected will emplane to Holland for acclimatization before making it to Spain. More than one hundred and fifty walkers have registered to take part in the competition including Nigerians.
This year?s event is being organized by the Visco Walking Club in conjunction with the Ghana Athletics Association, and the National Sports Council. Sponsors for the championship include,Energizer,Alitalia,Puma,Voltic,Parleys Biscuit,ODAS business centre, Savoy and Biriwa Beach Hotels and many others.
