Cape Coast, Feb. 29, GNA - Apam Senior High School (SHS) on Thursday caused a major sensation when they grabbed both the boys and girls championship trophies in the 18th edition of the Central Region Schools and Colleges Athletics competition held at the Regional Schools and Colleges Park at Adisadel, Cape Coast.
The Boys bagged 65 points in their division followed by Cape Coast Technical Institute with 55 points to place second, St Augustine Collage was third with 52 points while Boa Amponsem SHS came fourth with 51 points.
Obrachire SHS came fifth with 47 points Adisadel College was sixth with 35 points while Agona Swedru SHS came seventh with 29 points. In the Girls division, Apam SHS also scored 103 points to place first followed by Holy Child SHS at the second position with 86 points, Wesley Girls came third with 77 points while Jukwa SHS placed fourth with 47 points.
Obrachire SHS took the fifth position with 38 points, Agona Swedru SHS was sixth with 30 points while Agona School of Business came seventh with 24 points.
Richard Owusu of Twifo Praso SHS was adjudged the best athlete in the Boys division while Charity Mensah of Apam SHS came up tops as the best athlete in the Girls' division.
Owusu came first in the high jump, long jump and triple jump while Charity Mensah who led her school's relay quartet team broke the 4x400 metres record of 14.4secs set by Apam SHS in 1995 and also came first in the 3,000 metres and 1,500 metre races.
Ms Rosemond Blay, Central Regional Director of Education congratulated the athletes, their trainers and supporters of the various schools and colleges for their comportment and high sense of discipline during the competition.
She urged all the athletes excelled at the competition to continue to train harder than before in their preparations towards next year's sports festival.
