Legon holds 46th Inter-Halls Athletics Championship

Accra, Oct. 31, GNA - The 46th Inter-Halls Athletics competition of the University of Ghana ended last Friday at the University's Athletics Oval at Legon.

The two-day event which started on Thursday, October 30 was aimed at selecting a team to represent the country's premier university at the impending Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games scheduled for University of Education, Winneba.

The championship drew participants from the University's traditional Halls of Commonwealth, Akuafo, Sarbah, Legon and Volta for the Male and Female Divisions.

The participating Halls vied for honours in disciplines such as athletics track and field events, football and table tennis among others. In the Female Division, Volta Hall emerged winners finishing on 95 points, followed by Akuafo Hall at second position on 83 points while Legon Hall and Sarbah Hall followed on 80 points and 54 points respectively. The champions were presented with a giant trophy and a plaque. The overall winners for the Male Division were not declared due to outstanding protests against some Halls.

Viviana Dansua of Legon Hall was adjudged the Overall Best Athlete after she smashed the existing records in the Long Jump, 200 metere and 400 metres.

She was presented with a plaque and cash reward for her remarkable achievement.

Professor Kwasi Yankah, Pro Vice Chancellor of the University in his closing remarks commended the Sports Directorate headed by Dr Emmanuel Owusu Ansah for reviving general sports in the premier university. He said the performance exhibited by the athletes marked a major improvement of previous editions, which was characterized by 'uninspiring' standards.

Professor Yankah commended the participating athletes and Halls in general for exhibiting good sportsmanship during the two-day Championship. Emmanuel Adu, Sales Manager of Pepsi Ghana Limited, sponsors of the event pledged his outfit's support for the games which he noted serves as a platform to the discovery of sporting talents. He announced a package consisting of a crate of Pepsi products and mobile phones for winners of each discipline.
