Eric Opoku, the minister-designate for Food and Agriculture, has promised that secondary schools will establish farms if he is confirmed as minister.
He noted that the initiative would help boost the country’s agricultural sector by utilizing Ghana's vital land resources.
Opoku made this statement in response to a question posed to him during his appearance before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 20, 2025. He was asked how he intends to strengthen the nation’s agricultural sector.
The initiative, dubbed institutional farming, aims to encourage schools to actively participate in agriculture.
“We are also going to encourage institutional farming. Every secondary school in this country will be required to own a farm,” he said.
He also promised to collaborate with the Ministry of Education to “recruit laborers for secondary schools to help them establish and maintain their farms.”
The Member of Parliament for the Asunafo South Constituency in the Bono Region explained that the initiative would not only address the issue of inadequate food supply for secondary schools but also improve the quality of meals served to students.
“If nothing else, we can reduce the cost of school feeding and also enhance both the quality and quantity of the food provided to our students,” he stated.
