Apply consensus building, don’t take the highway - Sylvester Mensah to EC

Sylvester A. Mensah Sylvester A. Mensah

A former boss at the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Mr. Sylvester A. Mensah, has admonished the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) to apply their tool of consensus building as they embark on their new voter registration exercise.

This he indicated will help sustain Ghana’s democracy.

The former presidential aspirant in a Facebook post indicated that the use of consensus-building could help bridge differences and create a stable political atmosphere in every democracy.

According to him, "None has ever taken the “highway” with unilateral decisions. Indeed, pressures and opposition concerns have always informed decisions and actions. It would certainly not be useful to persist and take the highway of unilateralism, abandoning time tested approaches and successful pathways.”

EC Must Help Sustain Ghana’s Democracy!

Yes, Ghana has a stable democracy, but let’s not take it for granted! Our democratic stability is to the extent that governments and government institutions are responsible and responsive to significant concerns and aspirations of the people.

Consensus building is a powerful tool that bridges differences and creates stable political atmosphere in every democracy. All past Electoral Commissioners have successfully applied the tools of consensus building and compromise within the IPAC framework to sustain Ghana’s democratic stability. Non has ever taken the “highway” with unilateral decisions. Indeed, pressures and opposition concerns have always informed decisions and actions. It would certainly not be useful to persist and take the highway of unilateralism, abandoning time tested approaches and successful pathways. Let’s not grope and run in the dark and end up making the 4th Republic dysfunctional. I’m afraid, the consequences could be dire.

Mind you, political stability has always been a function of responsible political leadership!

God Bless our Homeland Ghana!!
