Deputy Western Regional Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Ebenezer Essien has condemned and described the actions and posturing of the Electoral Commission as a threat to Ghana’s democracy.
According to him, the EC Chairperson Jean Mensa and her Deputy Dr Bossman Asare are gradually becoming a cause to worry for the peace and stability in the country.
Explaining further, he said majority of Ghanaians will be disenfranchised if the Electoral Commission insists on using only the Ghana card and a valid passport as requirements for the new register.
He added that some Ghanaians have also not registered for the National Identification Card and others who have registered are yet to receive their cards.
However, the Deputy Western Regional Communications Officer of the opposition party alleged that Akufo-Addo and his Administration together with the Electoral Commission (EC) and the National Identification Authority are conspiring to suppress votes in the strongholds of the NDC.
He stressed on the issue that, the decision of the Electoral Commission to push for the Ghana Card and Passport as the primary documents required to register during the voters’ registration exercise is part of a grand scheme to rig the 2020 elections in favour of the governing NPP.
“We of the NDC believe strongly that the President and the NPP government together with EC and the NIA have planned to deny some Ghanaians from partaking in the new voter registration exercise and by so doing to disfranchise them from voting in the 2020 general elections. And they have planned to do this in the NDC strongholds. The EC wants to suppress voters in NDC strongholds” he told Kwame Tutu on Anopa Nkomo on Accra base Kingdom FM.
