The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has confirmed the Technical Advisor at the Office of the Vice President, Dr. Tia Abdul-Kabiru Mahama, as its parliamentary candidate for the Walewale Constituency in the North East Region.

In a statement issued by the General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, the party indicated that its National Executive Committee (NEC) unanimously confirmed Dr. Kabiru Mahama's candidature at an emergency meeting on the same day.

“The National Executive Committee of the New Patriotic Party, at its meeting held on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, unanimously confirmed Dr. Tia Abdul-Kabiru Mahama as the Party's Parliamentary Candidate for the Walewale constituency,” part of the statement reads.

The party also explained that the decision to confirm the technical advisor to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia came after the other aspirants, including incumbent Member of Parliament for Walewale, Lariba Zuweira Abudu, decided to step out of the race.

The party commended the MP for her decision and charged its members in the constituency to unite behind Dr. Kabiru Mahama to help it retain the seat on December 7, 2024.

“The decision was arrived at following the withdrawal of Hon. Lariba Zuweira Abudu, incumbent Member of Parliament and one of the two aspirants, from the parliamentary primary contest. This resulted in Dr. Tia Abdul-Kabiru Mahama becoming the sole aspirant for the contest.

“The Party regards in high esteem the decision of Hon. Zuweira to bow out of the race and appeals to all stakeholders of the Walewale constituency to offer their unflinching support to the candidacy of Dr. Tia Abdul-Kabiru Mahama. May God bless our homeland Ghana and make the New Patriotic Party great and strong,” the statement concluded.

Background:

Hajia Zuweira Abudu announced her withdrawal from the constituency's primaries to elect a parliamentary candidate for the 2024 elections on Tuesday, September 10, 2024.

The result of the NPP parliamentary primaries for Walewale Constituency was inconclusive after two rounds of voting in January and September 9, 2024, respectively.

After the first election held in January, Dr. Kabiru Tia Mahama was adjudged the winner with 7 votes more than Hajia Lariba.

However, the incumbent MP challenged the results in court, alleging widespread irregularities, including fraud, impersonation, and wrongful declaration.

The high court agreed the election was fraught with irregularities and, therefore, annulled the results.

On September 9, 2024, the election was re-run between Hajia Lariba and Dr. Kabiru, but the sorting and counting of the ballots were again disrupted following attacks on the process, leading to the Electoral Commission annulling the election once more.
