We must fight against 'cash-and-carry democracy' – James Agbey

James Agbey James Agbey

James Agbey, a prominent figure in the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of orchestrating a vote-buying scheme ahead of the 2024 general elections, according to a 3news.com report.

In a statement, Agbey claimed that the Bawumia campaign, in conjunction with running mate Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has been engaging in an operation designed to influence voter behaviour through financial inducements.

“I, James Agbey, an operative of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has uncovered plans by Bawumia/Napo campaign to indulge in manipulation of the 2024 elections through cash inducement to the clergy, chiefs and other key stakeholders.

“The plot which has now received approval at the highest level of the NPP and its presidential campaign has been designed in Ashanti Region and exported to all the sixteen regions.

“In fact, this plot is being executed under the platform Support Group Coordination, where targeted clergymen, influential chiefs and opinion leaders are being engaged to sway the people in their local area to vote for the NPP in the forthcoming general elections in return for cash.

“I’ve also been informed that Bawumia/Napo in their campaign rounds have been executing this scheme in continuation of the illegal practice of vote-buying that has characterised elections in the country,” he is quoted to have said in the 3news.com report.

The alleged plot, according to Agbey, involves the Support Group Coordination platform, where targeted clergymen, influential chiefs, and other local opinion leaders are being offered cash incentives to sway voters in their favor.

Agbey stated, “In recent times, vote buying has steadily grown in scale and brazenness. Several videos and images have emerged, showing unabashed sharing of cash, food, and valuable items among the electorate by the Bawumia campaign.”

He denounced this practice as “cash-and-carry democracy” and urged a unified stance against such electoral manipulation.
