Works on dams designated for the Builsa South District under government flagship programme of “One-Village One -Dam” are progressing steadily.

Mr Daniel Kawme Gariba, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Builsa South, who disclosed this said, the project is intended to promote agriculture in its varied forms and ensure food security in the district.

The DCE said 10 dams had been earmarked for construction in the area and indicated that the dams would further provide quality livelihood to the people, especially those in the rural communities.

Mr Gariba disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Fumbisi, the district capital, and said when the projects are completed, it would intensify agricultural activities such as farming and livestock production among other things in the area.

He said out of the 10 dams, three were at early stages of construction, two at about 80 per cent complete while three others are about 50 per cent, adding that, the Fumbisi area was an agricultural hub of the Upper East Region, and that, the dams would promote food security since farmers can farm all year round.

The DCE said the dams were dear to government and so he had keenly monitored activities to be abreast with progress of work to ensure that they are well constructed.

Mr Gariba said the area was noted for its rice-growing potential, and that, the dams were crucial for the area because, in addition to its potential in rice growing, it had large livestock farming activities that would complement the rearing for food and jobs programme, which would take off soon in the districts.

He said government was interested in the human development of the society and so had promulgated proactive human-centred policies that would enhance the welfare of the citizenry to ensure an improvement in the quality of livelihoods.

Mr Gariba said the District Assembly was putting stringent measures in place to promote socio-economic development by ensuring that education, health, water, sanitation and agriculture was provided for the people in the area.

Touching on education, the DCE said as result of strict monitoring and supervision, and the provision of adequate infrastructure for teaching and learning, the district was adjudged the overall best performing District in the 2018 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the region.

He called on the people in the area to support government in the implementation of the flagship programmes to enhance their response against poverty, which had been their major enemy over the years.
