One of the biggest food chains in the world, KFC has been accused of stealing a South African local dish idea which is chicken kota and was birthed by young entrepreneur Romeo Malepe.

Kota which is also known locally as Sphatlo, is a big sandwich with multiple ingredients stuffed into a quarter loaf of bread, wrapped and eaten on the go.

KFC is set to launch a dish which is just like the chicken kota proposed by Romeo Malepe.

According to a BBC report, Romeo said the idea he got four years ago was stolen by the chain when he was looking for a partnership with them.

KFC has, however, denied the claims by the entrepreneur in a statement to South African media, saying it was “no secret that kota is a famous South African meal and the limited-edition KFC Sphatlho is a result of an internal product development process.”

Adding that the South African food trend has been an inspiration for the chain over the years.

“We will continue to use South African food trends as inspiration to bring relevant products to our fans across South Africa,” KFC stated.
