Curfew enforced in Ethiopia's Gambella Region following fresh violence

Ethiopia Ethiopia

The authorities in Ethiopia's Gambella region have taken stringent measures by imposing a night-time curfew after a series of violent incidents resulted in numerous casualties.

The curfew, which runs from 19:00 to 06:00, restricts movement during these hours to curb further unrest, BBC reports.

As of now, the regional government has refrained from providing specific casualty figures, but they have issued a statement promising to hold accountable those "members of the leadership" who were allegedly involved in disturbing the peace.

The recent violence in Gambella reportedly took on ethnic dimensions, with clashes erupting in at least two areas. Local media have been covering the events, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.

In response to the escalating tensions, businesses and offices in the regional capital, Gambella city, remained closed on Wednesday.

Gambella region, which shares its borders with South Sudan, has unfortunately been experiencing recurrent violence in recent months.

In May, there were reports of at least seven fatalities and more than a dozen injuries in clashes within Gambella city. Additionally, last year, the city fell victim to an attack by rebel fighters from the neighboring Oromia region, leading to dozens losing their lives.
