Unag to Establish Kofi Annan University

The proposed Kofi Annan University would be affiliated with the Bradford University in the United Kingdom (UK) and would serve as a nerve center for the training of people in conflict resolution and peace keeping among others.

Three square miles of land for the project has already been donated by the National Treasurer of the UNAG, Mr. W. G. Nartey, at Great Ningo in the Greater Accra Region.

This was disclosed by Mr. E. N. Amuasakyi -Amoah, Secretary General of the association when two officials of the United Nations Association of the United Kingdom (UNA-UK) paid a five - day working visit to the country.

The trip of the officers, Mrs. Hannah Dadzie-Dankwa and Miss Martha Dankwa, was at the instance of the World Federation of the United Nations Association (WEUNA) UK office, to among other things offer the opportunity for an interaction between WFUNA and the new executive of the UNAG.

Some of the places visited by the visitors included some projects being sponsored by the UNAG in the Greater Accra Region. They first visited the Disabled Centre at Big Ada where the Director of the Centre, Mrs. Felicia Opoku-Mensah, took them round to inspect a new building meant for the disabled under construction at the roofing level.

The block, comprising a dormitory, two classrooms, an office, kitchen, toilets and baths, was donated by a philanthropist from Ada.

Accompanying the two officers were Mr. E. N. Amuasakyi-Amoah, Mr. W. G. Nartey, Mr. S. A. Sowah, Deputy National Treasurer, UNAG, Mrs. Jane Nyame, Deputy Secretary General, Mr. Alex Tetteh, National Disabled Organizer, Nana Balerki Kaki Kpentey I, a Patron of UNAG at Ada, Mr. B. A. Okine, Ga District President of the Association, Mrs. Frances Sackey, an executive at the Tema District, and Evangelist P. K. Ananti-Tetteh, Public Relations Officer and Administrative Director of the Association.

From Ada, the delegation went to Great Ningo to inspect the site for the proposed Kofi Annan University and then drove straight to Chorkor in Accra to inspect the Primary and Junior Secondary Schools being run by the UNAG.

The last place that was visited by the delegation was the UNAG Batik Tie and Dye Training Centre at Kwashiman, also in Accra.

Mrs. Philomena Yaa Messesen, the Production Manager of the Centre, led some of the instructors to demonstrate how batik tie and dye is produced to the visitors.

An exhibition was also mounted to display the array of products made at the centre. Later, Mr. W. G. Nartey presented two pieces of batik tie and dye to Mrs. Hannah and Miss Martha Dankwa on behalf of the association.

The two officers expressed their gratitude to the Association and gave the assurance that the WFUNA and the UNA-UK would assist and also collaborate with their Ghanaian counterparts to work in the interest of peace and development in the two countries.
