Mordecai Quarshie, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ledzokuku, has described the New Patriotic Party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as an underdog in the presidential race.

According to him, Dr. Bawumia’s influence and impact have consistently been undermined by various polls, causing people to overlook how threatening his candidacy can be in the elections.

He made this known while discussing political campaigns ahead of the 2024 elections on JoyNews on Friday, October 11, 2024.

“It is important to understand that in the presidential, our candidate is the underdog in the race. Every poll has put him behind. We are working hard to catch up and overtake, that is what we are doing now,” he said.

Mordecai Quarshie explained how Dr Bawumia has changed the face and narrative of the country's political sphere.

He asserted that Dr. Bawumia has positioned himself as a candidate of transformation and change, despite being part of the incumbent government, a narrative that has shifted over time.

He added that John Dramani Mahama, who should be delivering a message of change to the public, is instead promising to reset the country back to the past.

“This election is interesting because not only is he the underdog, Dr Bawumia is also the candidate of change and transformation. You would have thought that normally, in an election especially an 8 year election cycle, the opposition candidate which is the candidate of change and the incumbent candidate from the incumbent party tend to be the candidate of continuity, but in this situation, the candidate of the ruling party is rather the candidate of transformation and change while the opposing candidate is rather the candidate who is resetting to a past state of affairs that was supposedly okay,” he added.

Highlighting the importance of the 2024 general elections, Mordecai Quarshie stated that the voters' decision will determine the country’s trajectory, deciding whether it will move toward the past or the future.

“This election is really a choice between the past and the future strangely and the candidate of the incumbent party is now looking like the candidate of change because of the bold solutions he’s talking about,” he concluded.
