A Security Analyst, Adam Bonaa has called for the immediate resignation of the Minister of State in charge of National Security at the presidency, Mr Bryan Acheampong, over the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election shooting and violence.

According to him, the Minister on the basis of principle and his alleged direction of the assault during the by-election, must immediately resign.

“There are two things; either he resigns on his own or the government will ask him to step aside. For me these are the processes we should usually go through as democratic country that is still learning. As I talk to you now the national security officers are still at post including the person who sent them. So until such a time that they’re cleared, I believe that those people should be asked to stay home until the fact finding team are done with their work, so that we know what we’re doing,” Adam told Kwaku Owusu Adjei on Anopa Kaaspa on Kasapa 102.5 FM.

He further argued that if the Minister and his boys stay on while the probe is on course,”it’ll leave too much room for speculation” and at worse interfere with the work of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry”

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has set up a Presidential Commission of Inquiry to investigate the Ayawaso-West-Wuogon by-election violence.



The Commission is composed of: Mr. Justice Emile Short – Chairperson, Mrs. Henrietta Mensah Bonsu – Member, Mr. Patrick K. Acheampong – Member.

Mr. Ernest Kofi Abotsi, former Dean of the Faculty of Law of GIMPA and private legal practitioner, has been appointed as Secretary to the Commission.

The terms of reference of the Commission are:
(a) to make a full, faithful and impartial inquiry into the circumstances of, and establish the facts leading to, the events and associated violence during the Ayawaso West Wuogon By-Election on the 31st day of January 2019;

(b) to identify any person responsible for or who has been involved in the events, associated violence and injuries;

(c) to inquire into any matter which the Commission considers incidental or reasonably related to the causes of the events and the associated violence and injuries; and

(d) to submit within one month its report to the President giving reasons for its findings and recommendations, including appropriate sanctions, if any.

Thursday’s by-election at Ayawaso-West Wuogon constituency was characterized by violence after some armed masked and hooded in police vehicles stormed the residence of the residence of the NDC parliamentary candidate.

In the process, six people were shot leaving them with varying degrees of injuries. The Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Sam George was also assaulted and by the unknown men yet to be identified.

NPP’s Lydia Seyram Alhassan won the election and was sworn-in by Parliament on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Police Administration says it has expanded a committee to investigate the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency by-election shooting incident.

The investigations, police say, will cover the professional and criminal conduct of those involved in the incident.

A statement signed by Director General of Public Affairs, ACP Mr David Eklu, said personnel from Police Professional Standards Bureau, Police Legal and Prosecution Directorate, Police Operations as well as detectives from the Police Crime Scene Unit and Airport Division have joined the probe.

ACP George Tweneboah, Deputy-Director-General, heads the investigation committee, the statement said.
