Commission of Inquiry: I was 'kept in the dark' on SWAT operations – IGP

Inspector General of Police, David Asante Apeatu Inspector General of Police, David Asante Apeatu

The Inspector General of Police, David Asante Apeatu says it is the prerogative of the National Security Operative to inform them of their operations.

However, as far as the Ayawaso West Wuogon operation was concerned, he had no idea of the SWAT operations that led to violence during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.

The IGP made this known when he took his turn at the Emile Short Commission of Inquiry, Tuesday.

“I am not disputing the fact that my regional Commanders did not know about this . . . I also did not know about this (SWAT Ayawaso operation) . . .If the operation is not going to be beyond the Ghana Police Service, I think we should be informed . . . Yes we should have been informed, but I wasn’t told," he added.

He also admitted that “there is a lot of room for improvement as far as coordination and collaboration within the security agencies is concerned and that going forward, more work will be done to ensure harmonization."
